1. Political campaign.
The following was written for Penny Johnson, LNP Candidate for Cook during the 2017 Queensland State Election campaign. The excerpt is part of a 760-word piece written for a full-page advertisement published in the Mareeba Express
Dear People of Cook
Many of You Know Me…Penny Johnson is my name and I am a fierce advocate for people, prosperity through innovation, and plain hard work.
I have been on the land all my life, with the best slice of it here in the electorate of Cook. This is the place I belong. I know and love the land, the people, and the weather, most of the time! Been through the droughts, fires and floods. Shared the good stuff and the bad. I have been a jillaroo, kept a zoo, managed tourism enterprises and roadhouses. We’ve won awards running tourism businesses, and created many local jobs throughout the community. We’ve also run a great business 4WD up the Cape, an airline agency and an accommodation-booking business with Bart – my life and business partner. I haven’t been busy at all!
In case you haven’t picked it up – I care about the people of Cook! I’ve put that care to seriously good practical use as Deputy Mayor of Cook Shire, and Chair of the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. I love getting involved in events, as a volunteer, and have coordinated the award-winning Cooktown Bull Ride & Barrel Race and initiated lots of appeals for fires and floods.
Red tape – let me at it! I successfully negotiated for local business support during Cyclone Grace recovery and secured the first partial Shire drought-declaration in over four decades in Cook Shire. All negotiated with State Government – and I am committed to reducing all red tape hurdles. What better place to do that from, than a seat in government representing you?!
A vote for me is a vote for local knowledge, for commitment, and a demonstrated knack for getting lots of stuff done!
Life-Saving Mobile Mental Health Service for Remote and Regional Far North Queensland Crowd-Funding Campaign
As you know, graziers in Far North Queensland have suffered through a decade-long series of natural (and man-made) disasters that have pushed many families over the edge – huge floods, massive bushfires, the live-export ban, and drought lasting four years, in some places much longer.
In the wake of these disasters, many Etheridge and Croydon Shire landholders have come to rely on the life-saving mobile mental health service provided by Cris Jones of Seachange Psychology, Cairns.
Unfortunately, funding for his program is uncertain beyond December 2017.
So, we have started a campaign to keep the service going. Firstly, we are using crowd-funding to make a short film showing the people, the landscapes, the challenges, and the mental health consequences of those disasters. The film will cost $15,000 to make. Videos are much more effective than just words at getting the message across, particularly for those folk in cities who have never been to the Bush.
We will then take the video, along with a business plan, to potential program funders, including government, agricultural supply and mining companies, banks, foundations & philanthropists. Our long-term goal is to get the mobile-service model adopted for post-disaster mental health service delivery in the Bush, Australia-wide.
We must and can keep this service going – with your support. Please follow this link to find out more: https://pozible.com/project/coping-with-disasters-in-remote-fnq. Donations gratefully received. Rewards include beautiful Outback photos by Professional Photographer Ann Britton – here is an example:
The campaign has less than 40 days to run, and if we don’t reach our goal we don’t get any funds. We are using Pozible, an Australian crowd-funding platform – if we don’t reach our goal the pledges are not finalised, and nobody gets any money, including Pozible, who charge 5% on successful campaigns only.
Please donate, share this with as many people as you can, and encourage them to donate as well.

XXXX – About (Original Page)
The world is changing faster than ever before. We operate in a global marketplace, with global opportunities and global competition. As entrepreneurs working on our own ideas, we recognised the need to shift our focus to a global marketplace, however, we soon became aware of the limitations of the existing support structures in our region to help us develop our ideas.
Over the past four and a half years, the team at XXXX has been working with key strategic partners to develop the local startup and innovation ecosystem in Far North Queensland. Our intention has been to help develop an environment to support us (all of us) to more effectively turn our ideas into reality.
Whether you are new to the business, running an existing business, an inventor or a larger corporation wishing to integrate innovation into its culture… we are linked by one core desire – “turning ideas into a commercial reality”

I first became associated with Dr Richard Musgrove, because a colleague referred him to me as a person with knowledge of how to go about applying for Government grants. That person only scratched the surface of Richard’s potential. I employed Richard to run a media campaign in support of a project with which I was engaged, and he went well beyond what I was expecting, in providing on-time, and written responses to the various organisations, organising media releases, and a crowd-funding campaign, writing scripts for, and presenting video, and so on. He quickly developed an in-depth knowledge of what I was needing from him, and used his extensive and constantly developing network to help achieve the goals for which I was reaching.
I have no hesitation in recommending Richard to anyone who is seeking a committed, dedicated and reliable resource to help carry a project through to its conclusion
Crispian JonesSeachange Psychology
Dr. Richard Musgrove provided expert advice and editing skills to a piece I had prepared for release to the media. He was able to deftly weave the intent of the message in such a way that was engaging, informative and succinct yet still truly captured the ideas and information I wanted to convey to the reader. I was very pleased with the final piece, and delighted that it was printed without further editing by the media that picked it up and ran with it.
I will most certainly utilise Richard’s writing skills for future work and heartily commend him to you.”
– Penny Johnson, LNP Candidate for the seat of Cook, Queensland State Elections 2017
“Before working with Richard I had engaged friends and family to review my web site. After engaging Richard I immediately understood the value of working with a professional. Richard provided clear, easy to implement actions and new content which was so on point it even improved my understanding of my own business.” – Hugh Armitage, EasyComply, TheSpace, Cairns
Dr Richard Musgrove has proven his capabilities in roles that require an astute scientific mind and systematic approach. He commits to the project he is undertaking and ensures timeframes are met, reports are well prepared and budgets are developed and adhered to. Richard accepts responsibility for senior management roles and continually seeks to deliver the desired outcomes on budget, in a timely and effective manner.
I worked with Richard when we were developing a business case for investment in a range of NRM programs that was then presented to the government. This was delivered in person by Richard in his position as Operations Manager, the organisation’s Chairman along with myself, the vice chair. It was very well received in no small part to Richard’s attention to detail, intense research and scrutiny, fact-checking and excellent wordsmithing and presentation of the final document. This document and the manner of presentation, was referred to as an example for other organisations in community-based NRM to follow when preparing their similar submissions.
Richard was articulate and engaged well with department heads and representatives of state and federal government departments. He has consistently developed and maintained strong and respectful working relationships with funding bodies, industry peers and all 3 tiers of government. Richard always conducts himself with the utmost professionalism and commitment and I am confident he will continue to do so for anyone who engages his professional services through Musgrove Consulting.

“I am very happy to recommend Richard, not just in his capacity as Event manager, but because of a range of excellent attributes that would ensure his capability in many roles. The structure of our committee assigns jobs to members on a “portfolio” basis. Although he has held the position of Event Manager for two years, Richard does much more, and he does it reliably, willingly and with considerable flair. He has also taken a significant role in developing our program and troubleshooting problems when they arrive. His expertise with electronic media is a decided asset that he uses in all of these roles. I can recommend him highly.”
Rob Morrison Freelance science Writer, Broadcaster and Video production (SA), October, 2011,
“Richard is a thorough scientist who produces high quality research on a range of species and seafood products. He is also a very active science communicator, passionate about sharing science with the wider community.”
Dr Andrew Barber Operations Manager - Australia at Obela Fresh Dips and Spreads, February 7, 2012,
“At a recent conference that we held, Richard displayed outstanding organisational and leadership skills in coordinating speakers, managing the program timing, event photography and follow up reports and articles. I would recommend him to others seeking someone to fulfil a similar role in event coordination and delivery.”
